DIANE AURELIA BURTON
I continued to travel from place to place until 1975 when I arrived in Lincoln, Nebraska. I lived in Lincoln until 1984, when I moved to Auburn, which is 70 miles SE of Lincoln. I still wonder how I became a Nebraskan, but with over 20 years in residence, I have to accept it. I must confess that my response to the question "Where are you from?" is still "All over." I have two daughters [Christine 23; Patricia 21]. Tina lives in Phoenix, AZ and is taking some classes at Arizona State U. Patti is still in Lincoln, and works in data entry for a big insurance company. I have been married since 1994 to Charles Hahn, a banjo playing, country lawyer. I attended various schools [University of Maryland the European extension; Bellevue College; University of Nebraska-Omaha; Nebraska Wesleyan University] and I finally got my BA in December 1979 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I spent from 1980-1982 in graduate school working towards a masters in sociology -- took all the course work and passed the comprehensive exams, but failed to actually write a thesis. I am now BACK in grad school, having to retake some of the more tedious courses. I am determined to complete the masters this time. Since 1965: I've worked as a zookeeper and flagpole painter [1969]; while my former husband was stationed at Ft. Carson, CO [1972-1974], I was vice-president of the Medical Officers Wives' Club; I became a legal assistant in 1984 (not much else for a sociologist to do at that time); since 1988 I've been working on public policy aspects of a couple of environmental issues; given that I 'play' in politics, I now have a couple of political appointments -- Court of Appeals Judicial Nominating Commission and Technical Advisory Committee to the Department of Environmental Quality; I also serve on a local city council committee that develops solid waste policy and programs -- our little town of 3,500 now has curbside recycling. Back in 1992 I received an interesting award -- fondly referred to in my family as the Ms. Tampax Award. The greening of corporate America lead the Tampax company to sponsor an award, Environmental Women of Action. One woman was designated from each state, and got an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for an awards ceremony, plus, a plaque. Charlie told people I went to Washington for the Ms. Tampax swimsuit competition!Return to Email List
